What does EPDM stand for?
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer, a type of synthetic rubber. It’s the same family of material used in car door seals and pond liners, chosen for roofing because it stays flexible and weatherproof across a wide range of temperatures without becoming brittle or cracking. How does an EPDM roof work?
The rubber membrane is measured and cut to fit the roof, then fixed in place, either fully adhered or mechanically fixed to the roof deck. On larger roofs, this means joining sheets together, any seams are professionally welded using specialised tape systems to create a single, fully watertight membrane rather than relying on overlaps the way felt does. Edges, upstands and pipes are detailed the same way, so the whole roof forms one continuous, sealed surface.
The rubber itself is naturally flexible, so it moves with the roof as the structure expands and contracts with temperature changes, rather than cracking the way more rigid materials can.
Why does EPDM last so long?
Three things drive its longevity:
- Fully welded seams. Where joints are needed, they’re heat or tape welded into a single watertight membrane, not overlapped and hoped for, which is a major reason it outperforms felt.
